The CF Dictionary

BiPAP- A continuous positive airway pressure mode that helps keep the upper airways of the lungs open by providing a flow of air to the lungs through a mouthpiece or facemask. 

Cannula- a little line that goes into your hand or arm and is used for giving IV's. This can only stay in for a few days though.


CF- Cystic Fibrosis.



CFRD- Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes.

Creon- Tablets I have to take every time I eat to help me digest food. I usually call these my Enzymes.


eFlow-  eFlow rapid is a small, light weight, portable nebuliser, which is capable of efficiently producing aerosols from liquid medications. 

FEV1 - How much air you breathe out in 1 second. Measured in either percentage or in litres.



Fiasp- A fast acting insulin used at the beginning of a meal to treat diabetes.


FVC - How much air you breathe out in total. Measured in either percentage or in litres.


INEB- A handheld, battery powered aerosol drug delivery system that produces aerosol in a different way than conventional nebulizers; it does not require a supply of compressed air to drive the system. 

IV's- Intravenous Antibiotics.


Lung Function- How well my lungs are functioning. This is measured in percentage under FEV1 or FVC to show how much percent of my lungs are functioning properly and actually working.



Novarapid- A treatment for people with diabetes, containing a rapid acting insulin.

PICC Line- a long line inserted into the arm, that goes all the way to the top of the heart for giving IV's.


Portacath/Port- a small device, fitted under the skin, with a line attached that goes to the top of the heart for giving IV's. This is permanent and you just attach a gripper needle when you are in need of some IV's.


Puffer- This is known as a Nebuliser and it allows me to breath in antibiotics needed to keep my lungs well.


Scoliosis- A curve of the spine from side to side. Making it look an 'S' or 'C' shape.
